Don’t miss 2x Grammy-nominated and 3x Stellar Award-winner:
Believe it or not: for De’Sean Jones, a tenor sax prodigy who has collaborated with Makaya McCraven and toured the world with Stevie Wonder, The Clark Sisters, Yolanda Adams and Faith Evans, it all started with a casual bet between De’Sean and his father. Just 12 years old at the time, De’Sean heard the music of Charlie Parker and Miles Davis. Intrigued, but not intimidated, his reaction was “I can do that.” To his surprise, the elder Jones called his bluff by purchasing a saxophone and gave the young man six months to prove himself. The rest is music history, still in the making.
His mentors entered his life early, leading him into the folds of Detroit’s weighty jazz scene at the age of 15. As a teenager Jones played with such notables as the late-great Gerald Wilson, Donald Walden, Lawrence Williams, and Marcus Belgrave.
Today, De’Sean Jones is a 2x Grammy-nominated and 3x Stellar Award-winning arranger, a 2022 Kresge Fellow Award Recipient, and was recently named curator for the DSO Detroit Symphony, where he conducts and composes for his latest ensemble, Urban Art Orchestra.
Join us this weekend to hear his rich and emotionally-charged sultry sound fusing the best of funk, hip hop, bebop and soul!
