Vanisha Gould bought a one-way ticket from Southern California and headed for New York City in 2015, and has emerged as a transformative and evolving young voice in the NYC and National jazz scene. She regularly performs at the hottest spots around the City, including Dizzy’s at Lincoln Center, the Jazz Gallery, Smalls, Mezzrow to name a few. She’s toured internationally and has been featured at major jazz festivals.
Inspired by artists like Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Joni Mitchell, Carmen McRae and Ella Fitzgerald, Vanisha has successfully curated her own sound as a composer and band leader: she captivates audiences with her mesmerizing smoky voice, her nuanced phrasing (which makes every song her own), and her darkly romantic sense of humor. Her originals capture the funniest and most poignant aspects of love in memorable ways that everyone relates to…evoking laughter, joy and tears in a single song. She interprets standards from the Great American Songbook in ways that call out new meanings and make them of the moment.
Vanisha’s special band for this ”Winter of LOVE!” celebration at Black Cat includes some of New York’s top rising talent. Featured guest saxophonist Nicole Glover recently finished a weeklong residency with Christian McBride at NYC Blue Note and then performed at the Monterrey Jazz Festival (with a night at Black Cat!). Vanisha’s core band members are some of the hottest names on the NYC scene: Chris McCarthy (keys), Dan Pappalardo (bass), Jongkuk Kim (drums) and Kayla Williams (viola).
This ensemble of young NYC Jazz ALL-STARS has forged a chemistry that is palpable from the stage. VANISHA will be doing a LIVE RECORDING during this special “Winter of LOVE!” residency at Black Cat.
Vanisha reflects on this special celebratory week at Black Cat: “After a few years of turmoil in our country, we guarantee that this New Year will be rung in with not just fun and joy, but HOPE. And a whole lot of LOVE!”
